Carnelian tricksters have often eschewed some of the finer points of red magery, often preferring to learn simpler, more pragmatic skills.
The carnelian trickster is an archetype of the red mage class.
A carnelian trickster adds Disable Device (Dex), Escape Artist (Dex), Sleight of Hand (Dex) and Stealth (Dex) to her list of class skills but lose Diplomacy and Intimidate as class skills.
Weapon and Armor Proficiencies
Carnelian tricksters are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the chakram, hand crossbow, rapier, shortbow, shortsword and all power weapons (melee and ranged). Carnelian tricksters are proficient with light armor, but not with any type of shields.
This ability replaces the red mage’s standard weapon and armor proficiencies.
Red Magery (Su)
A carnelian trickster gains access to the following red magery (replacing extra quick casts):
- Extra Arcane Retention: This grants the carnelian trickster an additional use of Arcane Retention per day.
Spell Combat (Ex)
Carnelian tricksters are well-versed in avoiding retaliation from would-be mage slayers. Whenever the carnelian trickster uses spell combat, she gains a circumstance bonus on concentration checks to cast defensively equal to her Charisma modifier made to avoid attacks of opportunity from creatures that are denied their Dexterity bonus to AC or from creatures the carnelian trickster is flanking. However, a carnelian trickster cannot reduce her attack roll to gain a bonus to concentration checks.
This ability modifies spell combat.
Arcane Sneak Attack (Su)
At 2nd level, a carnelian trickster gains an ability similar to a thief’s sneak attack. Whenever a carnelian trickster casts an offensive touch (ranged or melee) spell, uses a power weapon or uses pool strike (“a spell” inherently also means these other two as well) against a target that would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or against a target the carnelian trickster is flanking, she deals an extra 1d6 points of damage with that spell, power weapon or pool strike. When making an arcane sneak attack, the carnelian trickster does not provoke an attack of opportunity for making a ranged attack when threatened. At 5th level, and every three levels thereafter, this damage increases by an extra 1d6. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet. This additional damage is precision damage and is not multiplied on a critical hit. If the target is immune to precision damage but has an elemental weakness to the spell being cast, she deals her full arcane sneak attack damage but this extra damage is not multiplied. The carnelian trickster must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A carnelian trickster cannot use arcane sneak attack while casting a spell against a creature with total concealment. She may use, and qualify for, other feats and abilities as if this were a normal sneak attack.
Arcane sneak attack stacks with normal sneak attack, however only her actual arcane sneak attack dice may be used against enemies immune to precision damage.
This ability replaces spellstrike.
A carnelian trickster may learn a spell from the Illusionist spell list with a level of her highest known spell level or lower, provided that it is not already on her spell list. She may only learn illusionist spells up to 5th level. Illusionist spells learned this way are treated as being on the red mage spell list for all purposes.
This ability modifies advanced learning and replaces the ability to learn white or black mage spells (choose one) via Advanced Learning. She may still learn spells from that list via the Spell Blending ruby arcana.
Armored Mage (Ex)
A carnelian trickster only gains the ability to cast red mage spells in light armor. They do not gain the ability to cast in medium/heavy armor or while wearing a shield.
This ability replaces and modifies armored mage.
A carnelian trickster gains access to the following ruby arcana:
Arcane Stealth (Su): The carnelian trickster may spend a point from her arcane pool to gain the benefit of the Vanish spell until the start of her next turn. This ability is activated as a move action. Prerequisite: The carnelian trickster must possess the Arcane Cloak ruby arcana before selecting this ruby arcana.
Arcane Stealth, Greater (Su): The carnelian trickster may activate Arcane Stealth as a swift action, rather than a move. Prerequisites: The carnelian trickster must be at least 9th level and have the Arcane Stealth ruby arcana before selecting this ruby arcana.
Crimson Veil (Ex): The carnelian trickster learns two spells from the illusionist spell list with a level of her highest known spell level or lower, provided that it is not already on her spell list. She may only learn illusionist spells up to 5th level. Spells learned this way are treated as being on the red mage spell list for all purposes. When casting an illusionist spell learned this way of 1st level or higher, the carnelian trickster must also spend 1 point from her arcane pool. The carnelian trickster may take this ruby arcana more than once.
Mana Leech (Su): By spending 1 point from her arcane pool, the carnelian trickster may steal MP from a monster that has no MP pool, instead gaining a number of MP back equal to the number of dice she would roll to steal MP; to steal MP from a creature in this manner, she must forgo all of her dice for sneak attack damage. Prerequisites: The carnelian trickster must be at least 15th level and have the Steal MP feat before selecting this ruby arcana.
Ruby Knife: A carnelian trickster with this ruby arcana may take a thief talent that modifies a sneak attack (Any talent marked with an asterisk *). Any thief talent that requires the carnelian trickster to use a melee attack instead requires her to make an arcane sneak attack in melee range instead. A carnelian trickster may take this ruby arcana more than once.
Ruby Razor: This ability functions like ruby knife, except the carnelian trickster may take advanced thief talents, instead. A carnelian trickster may take this ruby arcana more than once. Prerequisite: The carnelian trickster must be at least 12th level before taking this ruby arcana.
Arcane Retention (Ex)
At 4th level, the carnelian trickster learns to quickly adapt in case of failure. If the carnelian trickster misses with an arcane sneak attack, either due to failing the attack roll or due to miss chance, she may, as an immediate action, “uncast” the spell, regaining the MP spent as well as any abilities related to that casting, such as the still magic ruby arcana or a point from her arcane pool in the case of crimson veil, as if the spell had never been cast in the first place. The carnelian trickster may use this ability a number of times per day equal to her Charisma modifier.
This ability replaces quick cast.
Improved Spell Combat (Ex)
This ability functions as per normal, except the +2 bonus is in addition to the bonus against a Dexterity denied/flanked opponent.
This ability modifies improved spell combat.
Greater Spell Combat (Ex)
The bonus on concentration checks against a Dexterity denied/flanked opponent increases to double the carnelian trickster’s Charisma modifier.
