A blend of swordplay and magic is oft seen through the charismatic prowess of the red mage. But, what if it was looked at through the lens of study and expertise?
The sword sage is an archetype of the scholar class.
Limit Breaks (Su)
At 1st level, the sword sage receives the Limit Breaks (Blending Blade and Scion of Spellblades).
Blending Blade (Su): This Limit Break allows the sword sage to use a Fighter limit break while in Combat Arts, or use a Red Mage limit break while in Casting Arts. If a limit break has a duration, it lasts for 1 round + 1 round per four scholar levels after 1st. Action required for this limit break is copied from the limit break the sword sage has chosen.
Scion of Spellblades (Su): This Limit Break allows the sword sage to use both Combat Arts and Casting Arts with all the bonuses but without penalties for a duration of 1 round + 1 round per four scholar levels after 1st. While this limit break is active, Tactical Repository provides both combat feats and metamagic feats when used. This limit break requires only a swift action.
These abilities replace the scholar’s starting Limit Breaks.
Proficiencies of Battle
The sword sage gains proficiency in light armor and all simple and martial weapons. The sword sage can cast while wearing light armor, casting spells from the black mage and white mage lists learned via scholar without incurring arcane spell failure
This ability modifies weapon and armor proficiencies, and replaces grimoire.
The sword sage trains both his body and his mind. A sword sage’s base attack bonus increases by one step (from 1/2 BAB to 3/4 BAB). Also increases sword sage’s hit dice from d6 to d8.
This ability replaces arcane hypothesis.
The Art of Battle (Su)
Starting at 1st level, as a standard action, a sword sage can activate or deactivate the Casting Arts or Combat Arts. Tactical Repository provides Metamagic feats while in Casting Arts, and combat feats while in Combat Arts.
At 7th level, a sword sage can switch between Casting Arts and Combat Arts as a move action instead of a standard action. At 13th level, a sword sage can switch between Casting Arts and Combat Arts as a swift action.
This ability replaces light arts/dark arts.
Tactical Repository (Ex)
A sword sage can take a move action to gain the benefit of a metamagic feat while in Casting Arts, or combat feat while in Combat Arts, he doesn’t possess. This effect lasts for 1 minute. The sword sage must meet all the feat’s prerequisites. He may use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + his sword sage level. The sword sage can use this ability again before the duration expires in order to replace the previous metamagic feat with another choice. The sword sage must pay MP costs as per normal when using metamagic feats gained this way. If a combat feat has a daily use limitation (such as Stunning Fist), any uses of that combat feat while using this ability count toward that feat’s daily limit.
At 3rd level, a sword sage can use this ability to gain the benefit of two metamagic feats while in Casting Arts, or two combat feats while in Combat Arts. at the same time. He may select one feat as a swift action or two feats as a move action. He may use one of these feats to meet a prerequisite of the second feat; doing so means that he cannot replace a feat currently fulfilling another’s prerequisite without also replacing those feats that require it. Each individual feat selected counts toward his daily uses of this ability.
At 7th level, a sword sage can use this ability to gain the benefit of three metamagic feats while in Casting Arts, or three combat feats while in Combat Arts, at the same time. He may select one feat as a free action, two feats as a swift action, or three feats as a move action. He may use one of the feats to meet a prerequisite of the second and third feats, and use the second feat to meet a prerequisite of the third feat. Each individual feat selected counts toward his daily uses of this ability.
At 11th level, a sword sage can use this ability to gain the benefit of one metamagic feat as an immediate action or three metamagic feats as a swift action. Each individual feat selected counts toward his daily uses of this ability, if in Casting Arts. If in Combat Arts, he may gain combat feats instead.
At 15th level, a sword sage can use this ability to gain the benefit of any number of metamagic feats as a swift action. Each feat selected counts toward his daily uses of this ability. If in Combat Arts, he may gain combat feats instead.
This ability replaces light arts: penury, dark arts: parsimony, light arts: accession, dark arts: manifestation, light arts: celerity, dark arts: alacrity, light arts: rapture, and dark arts: ebullience.
Crimson Emulation (Su)
The sword sage chooses from black mage, white mage or sword saint talents at 2nd level and every two scholar levels thereafter, using his scholar level in place of the class he takes talents from. If the sword sage takes sword saint talents, he can take from a maximum of two trees, and gains a stamina pool as a sword saint of his level. Sword saint talents taken by the sword sage use Wisdom or Intelligence (whichever is higher) as his stat to determine DCs and uses in place of Charisma.
These abilities may replace scholar exploits.
Blended Arts (Su)
At 9th level, he may spend 2 points from his arcane reservoir, alongside a use of tactical repository, to gain a feat granted by the opposite Arts. While in Casting Arts, he may gain a combat feat, and while in Combat Arts, he may gain a metamagic feat.
This ability replaces eldritch surge.
Extended Arts (Su)
At 13th level, the sword sage may spend 2 points from his arcane reservoir to extend the duration he has use of a feat from tactical repository by one minute. He spends 2 points per feat, and can extend as many or as few as he likes at once, as one swift action
This ability replaces improved surge.
Forceful Arts (Su)
At 17th level, the sword sage can spend 2 arcane reservoir to force a creature to reroll a saving throw against one spell or combat maneuver he performs and take the lower value. The sword sage must declare the use of this ability before the result of that creature’s saving throw is revealed. If the spell or combat maneuver affects more than one target, only one target is affected by this ability.
This ability replaces greater surge.
