The nation of Sharlayan is the cradle of knowledge, and the Studium its foremost institution of learning. Yet more so than its incomparable library and formidable assemblage of Archons, this prestigious academy is famed for blending traditionally distinct fields to produce revolutionary new disciplines. Among these, perhaps the most distinguished is an altruistic art which draws upon the wisdom of aetherology, sorcery, and medicine. Dubbed somanoutics, the art seeks to heal and protect by manipulating corporeal aether through the use of nouliths, a flying array of foci. Practitioners are dedicated to the betterment of mankind, and for her wisdom and compassion, eventually came to be known simply as sages.

The sage is an archetype of the astrologian class.

Archetype Main Ability Scores:
The sage mainly focuses on DEX and WIS for combat and WIS for their class features.

Limit Breaks (Su)

At 1st level, the sage receives the Limit Breaks (Panhaima and Pneuma).

Panhaima (Su): This Limit Break creates a regenerative barrier around all allies within 30-ft.-radius of the sage, granting them 1d6 temporary hit points plus an additional 1d6 temporary hit points per four astrologian levels after 1st. For 1 round + 1 round per four astrologian levels after 1st, all allies that gained temporary hit points from this Limit Break regain the same amount of temporary hit points at the start of her turn.

Pneuma (Su): This Limit Break causes the sage’s nouliths to go into overdrive and release a potent blast of aether, dealing 1d6 non-elemental damage plus an additional 1d6 non-elemental damage per two astrologian levels after 1st to all enemies within 30-ft.-radius of the sage. In addition, allies within the blast are healed for an amount equal to half the damage dealt.

These abilities replace the astrologian’s standard limit breaks.

Nouliths (Su)

Beginning at 1st level, a sage creates an aetherial device which acts as a casting focus and versatile weapon. Available nouliths can be commanded to attack as a standard action, dealing 1d6 non-elemental damage. The sage must make a ranged touch attack that has a range of 25 feet + 5 ft. per two astrologian levels after 1st. Nouliths cannot be enhanced normally, nor do they have any materia slots. To make this attack, the sage may not be wielding any other weapon and must have one hand free.

At 6th level and every five astrologian levels thereafter, the sage can construct and control an additional noulith, allowing her to make one additional attack whenever she commands the nouliths to attack.

This ability replaces star globe, draw, minor arcana, sleeve draw and time dilation.

Kardia (Su)

At 1st level, as a standard action, the sage can Kardion mark an ally, other than herself, within 30 feet. Whenever the sage deals damage to a hostile creature with her nouliths or casts a damaging spell, that marked ally heals for 1d4 and an additional +1 for each noulith the sage controls while within 30 feet of the sage. Only one creature may bear a Kardion mark at a time, and using this ability again will change the target.

This ability replaces prescience.

Dosis (Sp)

At 2nd level, the sage is capable of spending 1 MP to channel her aether through the nouliths to fire unerring projectiles acting like the Ruin spell. At 7th level, the sage can spend 4 MP to instead cast Ruinra. At 11th level, she can spend 6 MP to cast Ruinga.

This ability replaces forewarned.

Diagnosis (Sp)

At 2nd level, the sage is capable of weaving multiple protective magic into one spell. Whenever the sage casts any version of Shell or Protect, the other is cast at the same level without any MP cost. This feature may be used once per day plus one additional time for every four astrologian levels after 2nd.

This ability replaces fateful touch.

Academic Research (Ex/Su)

At 2nd level, and every two astrologian levels thereafter, a sage advances her research to gain new capabilities. The sage must select a field of research from the list below. If a field of research is chosen at a later level, the sage gains all of the abilities and bonuses granted by that research based on her current level. Unless otherwise noted, the DC to save against these researches is equal to 10 + half of the astrologian’s level + her Wisdom modifier. Researches marked with an asterisk add effects to a sage’s spellcasting ability. Only one of these researchs can be applied to an individual spell and the decision must be made before the spell is cast. The sage may take Extra Astrology Secret feat to take extra academic researches.

Arcane Builder (Ex): The sage has an exceptional understanding of the theory behind creating magical items. She can select one type of magic item (potions, wondrous items, and so on); she creates items of this type 25% faster than normal and gain a +4 bonus on Spellcraft checks (or other checks, as appropriate) to craft items of this type. She may select this research multiple times; its effects do not stack. Each time she selects this research, it applies to a different type of magic item.

Arcane Reservoir (Su): The sage gains an Arcane Reservoir as if she was a scholar of the same level as her astrologian level. The sage does not naturally gain any Scholarly Exploits but may select the Extra Scholar Exploit feat. The sage treats her astrologian level as scholar levels for all Scholarly Exploits and must meet her prerequisites. The sage does not gain the Consume MP class feature nor can she select Scholarly Exploits that rely on this ability. Prerequisite: The sage must not have an Arcane Reservoir to select this research.

Coil Overdrive (Ex): The sage’s nouliths become more potent through minor upgrades, increasing her damage die by one step (d6 to d8, d8 to d10, or d10 to d12). This research can be chosen for each noulith she can currently control, up to three times. Prerequisite: The sage must be at least 6th level to select this research.

Concentrate (Ex): The sage can reroll any concentration check she has just made with a +4 bonus. She must use this ability after the roll is made, but before the roll’s outcome is determined. The sage must take the second roll, even if it is worse. The sage can use this ability once per day.

Defensive Feedback (Su)*: Rather than dissipate damaging energy, the sage can redirect some of it back to its source. When an enhancing spell the sage casts prevents damage (with damage reduction or energy resistance), if the attacking creature is within 30 feet of the protected creature, the foe takes 1d6 points of damage for every 10 points of damage prevented.

Dyskrasia (Su): As a full-round action, the sage can command her nouliths to focus fire around a 10 ft. radius located somewhere within 25 ft. + 5 ft. for every two astrologian levels. All creatures inside this radius take 1d6 points of non-elemental damage per two astrologian levels. A successful Reflex saving throw (DC 10 + half of the astrologian’s level + her Wisdom modifier) halves this damage. The sage can do this a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Wisdom modifier.

Enhanced Nouliths (Su): The sage is able to enchant her nouliths. As a swift action, the nouliths gains a +1 enhancement bonus, which increases by 1 for every four astrologian levels beyond 2nd (to a maximum of +5 at 18th level). A sage can also use this ability to add the distance weapon special ability. Adding this special ability replaces an amount of enhancement bonus equal to the ability’s cost. The benefits are decided upon when the ability is used, and she cannot be changed unless the ability is used again. The sage cannot have more than one use of this ability active at a time. This effect lasts for a number of minutes equal to the sage’s Wisdom modifier (minimum 1). Prerequisite: The sage must be at least 4th level to select this research.

Familiar (Ex): The sage forms a powerful bond with a familiar. A familiar is a magical pet that enhances the sage’s skills and senses and can aid in her magic. See this link for more information on familiars: Familiars

Far-Reaching Aid (Su): The sage’s range for applying her Kardia feature is increased to 60 feet. This also increases the range between her and the target of her Kardion mark for the purposes of healing.

Idealize (Su)*: The sage has discovered a way to further enhance herself and others. When an enhancing spell the sage casts grants an enhancement bonus to an ability score, that bonus increases by 2. At 20th level, the bonus increases by 4. Prerequisite: The sage must be at least 10th level to select this research.

Improved Enhancements (Ex)*: When the sage casts an enhancement spell, it’s highly effective in the first round. During the first round that the enhancement spell was cast, the effects are doubled. She may use this ability a number of times per day equal to her Wisdom modifier.

Mage Training: The sage may select an item creation or metamagic feat. The sage must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including caster level minimums. This research may be taken more than once. Each time, a different feat must be selected.

Mana Battery (Su): As a standard action, the sage can sacrifice her own magical font to store in her noulith as Addersgall. By spending 3 MP, the sage regains 1 point of Addersgall. The sage can do this a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Wisdom Modifier. Prerequisite: The sage must be at least 4th level to select this research.

Noulith Propulsion (Su): The sage’s noulith propulsion is so strong that her feet barely touch the ground. When the sage gains this research, she no longer leaves tracks. At 6th level, she can hover up to 5 inches above the ground or even above liquid surfaces, as if levitating. At 10th level, she gains the ability to fly, as per the spell, for a number of minutes per day equal to her astrologian level. This duration does not need to be consecutive, but it must be spent in 1-minute increments. Prerequisite: The sage must be at least 4th level to select this research.

Refractive Barrier (Su): The sage conjures a barrier that grants her a +2 deflection bonus to armor class. At 6th level, and every four astrologian levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1. At 12th level, this barrier now stacks with the deflection bonus granted by the Protect spells. The sage can use this ability a number of hours per day equal to her astrologian level. The duration does not need to be consecutive, it can instead be spent in 1-hour increments. Prerequisite: The sage must be at least 4th level to select this research.

Rhizomata (Su): Once per combat encounter, as a free action, the sage can generate 1 point of Addersgall, not to exceed the maximum. Prerequisite: The sage must be at least 6th level to select this research.

Spell Lore (Ex): The sage adds her astrologian level to all Spellcraft checks made to identify a spell being cast. (This is most often useful when attempting to counterspell.)

Surecast (Su): The sage exercises caution when in danger, casting her spells with more care. While in a threatened square, she may choose to spend a full-round action to cast a spell, with a casting time of standard action or less. Doing so allows them to cast the spell without needing to cast it defensively. Prerequisite: The sage must have the Combat Casting feat to select this research.

Zoe (Su)*: As a free action, the sage adds an element of extra healing energy to any healing spell she casts. Affected targets gain Fast Healing equal to the level of the spell for a duration of 1 round + her Wisdom modifier. The sage may use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Wisdom modifier.

These abilities replace astrology secret and sect power.

Addersgall (Su)

At 3rd level, the sage is capable of storing raw aetherial energy in her noulith to be used later. When the sage rolls initiative, she gain 3 points of Addersgall, to a maximum of 3. Once the encounter ends, these points last for 1 minute before being lost. The sage can spend a point of Addersgall when casting a spell of 1st level or higher from the healing or enhancing schools. Those spells cost 1 MP less (to a minimum of 1).

This ability replaces lightspeed.

Eukrasia (Su)

At 4th level, a sage is capable of augmenting her magical output. As a swift action, the sage can affect her next spell cast in the same round. If the next spell has a beneficial effect, allies affected will also gain a number of temporary hit points equal to twice the spell’s level for a duration of 1 round + Wisdom modifier. If enemy creatures are the target of a non-healing spell, then the effects are reversed (Such as Deshell when casting Shell).

This ability replaces royal road.

Prognosis (Sp)

At 5th level, the sage is capable of weaving stronger protective magics into one spell. Whenever the sage casts any version of Shellra or Protectra, the other is cast at the same level without any MP cost. This feature may be used once per day plus one additional time for every three astrologian levels after 5th.

This ability replaces heavenly path.

Kardion Burst (Su)

At 7th level, once per day, the sage can amplify the effects of her Kardion mark when firing her nouliths. Rather than its usual effect, the subject of her Kardion mark heals hit point damage equal to the damage dealt by the nouliths. The creature then loses its Kardion mark.

This ability replaces astral guidance.

Converging Shot (Su)

At 7th level, the sage can focus her noulith attacks to converge on a single target. When commanding them to fire in this way, the sage makes a ranged touch attack and combines the damage dice of all nouliths in her control. Additionally, she adds her Wisdom modifier once to the damage roll.

This ability replaces do-over.

Addersting (Su)

At 8th level, the sage is able to store raw non-elemental energy in her nouliths. Whenever the sage uses a point of Addersgall, she gains a point of Addersting (to a maximum of 3). Once the encounter ends, these points last for 1 minute before being lost. The sage can spend a point of Addersting when attacking with her nouliths to add her Wisdom modifier as bonus damage to each noulith damage roll. When using the Converging Shot feature with Addersting, she may also reroll 1s for damage with all noulith dice in addition to the bonus damage.

This ability replaces spread.

Improved Kardia (Su)

At 9th level, the sage is more adept at applying her Kardion mark. She may apply Kardia as a move action rather than a standard action. Furthermore, the sage can choose another target in range to apply the Kardion mark in place of her current target as a swift action.

This ability replaces synastry.

Icarus (Ex)

At 9th level, as a move action, the sage can jump to an ally. She travels in a straight line and must end in a space she can occupy adjacent to her target. The range of this ability is 50 ft. and will fail if there are any obstructions in the path. This ability can be used a number of times per day equal to her Wisdom modifier (minimum 1).

This ability replaces future sight.

Toxikon (Su)

At 10th level, the sage’s nouliths have been optimized to allow further destructive power. Whenever the sage casts a damaging spell or ability gained from astrologian levels, she can choose to spend 2 Addersting to have the spell or ability gain the benefits of the Maximize Spell metamagic without affecting the cost. At 17th level, the cost of this feature is reduced to 1 Addersting.

This ability replaces divination and chosen destiny.

Addershift (Su)

This ability replaces shuffle.

Advanced Academic Research (Ex/Su)

At 12th level, and every two astrologian levels thereafter, a sage can delve into more advanced subjects and theorems into the manipulation of Aether. She may choose one of the following Advanced Academic Research in place of an Academic Research. Fields of research marked with an asterisk add effects to a sage’s spellcasting ability. Only one of these researchs may be applied to an individual spell and the decision must be made before the spell is cast.

Dyskrasia II (Su): As a full-round action, the sage can command her nouliths to focus fire around a 10 ft. radius located somewhere within 25 ft. + 5 ft. for every two astrologian levels. All creatures inside this radius take 2d6 points of non-elemental damage per two astrologian levels. A successful Reflex saving throw (DC 10 + half of the astrologian’s level + her Wisdom modifier) halves this damage. The sage can do this a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Wisdom modifier. Prerequisite: The sage must have the Dyskrasia academic research to select this advanced research.

Effortless Healing (Ex): The sage has learned to cast healing spells with minimal effort. She may cast such spells without provoking attacks of opportunity. This ability applies only to healing spells that she casts as a sage, not to those that she may have by virtue of levels in another class.

Enhanced Kerachole (Su): Whenever the sage uses her Kerachole ability, affected allies gain Fast Healing 2 for a number of rounds equal to the sage’s Wisdom modifier. Prerequisite: The sage must have the Kerachole class feature to select this advanced research.

This reduction of damage is calculated before resistances.
