The target for this spell requires the Illuminated status effect to be in effect. Once you cast this spell, the Illuminated status effect is removed and causes the target to shed bright light out to a 20-ft.-radius. This illumination increases the light level by one step (darkness becomes dim light, dim light becomes normal light, and normal light becomes bright light). Creatures that take penalties in bright light take them while within the radius of this magical light. Brighten brought into an area of magical darkness (or vice versa) is temporarily negated, so that the otherwise prevailing light conditions exist in the overlapping areas of effect. This spell does not stack with itself. Brighten can be used to dispel any dark spell of equal or lower spell level. In addition, any dark spells cast require a DC 20 Concentration check or the spell fails.
Illuminated: An illuminated creature shines brightly, allowing others to see them clearly. The creature sheds normal light in a 5-foot radius from themselves, and increase the light level for an additional 5 feet by one step, up to normal light (darkness becomes dim light, and dim light becomes normal light), illuminated creatures take a -20 penalty on all Stealth checks. Due to the shining beacon of light, creatures attacking an illuminated target receive a circumstance bonus to attack rolls equal to 1/2 the spell level of the spell that inflicted the illuminated status (Light III grants +1 attack) minimum 1. Dark spells and effects remove this status effect.
